While Ice Cube had left the group, leaving the writing duties up to MC Ren and The D.O.C. (both completely underrated rappers, imo), Dr. Dre had stepped up his production, moving away from the sparse Boom-Bap 101 beats into a foreshadowing of G-Funk. Assisted by Cold187um (aka Hutch) of Above The Law, he brought in your face music to accompany the thug-on-the-corner street talk lyricism. This album reached #1 on Billboard its first week without any radio or video play.
