Outkast - ATLiens (1996)

The first album I remember getting really psyched about waiting for it's Tuesday release date. Read a comment somewhere that said ATLiens shouldn't have come as such a surprise to most people after Southernplayalistic... because the second half of their debut got really spaced out. While that may be true to an extent, this is like minimalistic funk that would become fully clothed on Aquemini and later tweaked the eff out on Stankonia. These guys should really be legends because it is rare for a group so talented to successfully switch their style on every album. Andre says on "Elevators": Everyday we looked up at the ceiling/ staring at ceiling fans go 'round trying to get that feeling/ off instrumentals. That's probably the fairest evaluation.
