Spiritualized - Songs In A & E (2008)

OMG, I just x-chromosomed my jeans. This is like springtime shoegaze, perfect for those upcoming mid-sixty degree evenings on the balcony, watching the helicopters' lights blink in sync with sattelites. The deeper I get into it, some of it's like Dylan shoegaze. Whatever, yo. It's good, and it just hit the internet.

Excepter - Debt Dept (2008)

How the hell did this get released without a word of it popping up on blogs or message boards? Bought the 12" for Burgers a while back, but didn't even know an LP was on the way. Kill People is my shit. Got a lot more from these guys. Let me know if ya'll are interested.

Scott Matthew - Self Titled

someone asked for this like a week ago. finally found it. know nothing about it other than it's not Scott Matthews, and he did songs on the Shortbus soundtrack.

Man Man - Rabbit Habits (2008)

This has a circus-ish feel while sounding 90's alt-rock. Not bad, but not my thing. Plus the title reminds me too much of an AC song.

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah World War Four (Part One)

Finally, something Madlib didn't completely fuck up! Seriously, this sounds like a Funkadelic album, and having Roy Ayers produce doesn't hurt. Bit rate is 320.

My Animal Collective Post

What can I really say? My favorite band in the universe just makes good music interesting. They change their style nearly every album, and generally play two albums in advance when touring. Seen them twice, and it's a brainmelt. Can't wait to see them again at pitchfork this summer!

My Subtle Post

The more the discs spin, the more I gain a respect for Subtle, and Doseone in particular. Their music is so technical, outside the box, emotional, and complex. It's rap, but it's not. Almost like a confused white boy doing solo Bone Thugs-N-Harmony impressions over irregular timestamps - but completely original. I can tell, the more time I spend researching Dose, that he was a huge hip-hop head, that it was his blood and ligaments. That's exactly how I felt for much of my life. Anyhow, he doesn't even rhyme half the time, but his flow is so incredible... I really hope that, like modern day poetry, eventually music goes the way of anti-rhyme. It's out-dated, unnecessary, confining (in a bad way), and just fucking cheesy. He pulls it off so well one rarely notices. You should probably read this instead of me continually jerking his cock.

Spiritualized - iTunes Live: London Sessions (2008)

This is an acoustic EP version of what's to come on their new album. Death Take Your Fiddle is heartbreaking.

Television - Marquee Moon (1977)

Post-punk before post-punk was post-punk. Another overlooked classic. So many groups have bit this shit.

Download: Mediafire

Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus (1997)

Company Flow's (El-P's first group) only real album (Little Johnny From The Hospital doesn't count), Funcrusher Plus sound like gritty New York underground punch you in the throat rap from the year 2137. If people in 2137 forgot how to rap on beat.

Download: Mediafire

Horace Andy - Dance Hall Style (????)

If you were a fan of Jonny Greenwood's Trojan dub mix, you should get this as fast as you can. Though iTunes says this was released in 2003, it was probably actually released in the 70's. Spaced out dub, mang. The songs will stick with you for days.

Whodini - Escape (1984)

These guys, at least for this album, were so far ahead of the curve it's unbelievable that they don't get more credit. They stayed on point lyrically (reminiscent of Grandmaster Flash on The Message), and the beats still get jacked today (Friends has been redone so many times it's ridiculous). Five Minutes Of Funk, Friends, Freaks Come Out At Night, and Escape are as good as any pre-90's hip-hop gets.

Thom Yorke - Spitting Feathers EP (2007)

The b-sides from The Eraser (videos not included). Main draws here are The Drunkk Machine and, my favorite, the extended mix of Harrowdown Hill.

N.W.A. - Efil4Zaggin (1991)

While Ice Cube had left the group, leaving the writing duties up to MC Ren and The D.O.C. (both completely underrated rappers, imo), Dr. Dre had stepped up his production, moving away from the sparse Boom-Bap 101 beats into a foreshadowing of G-Funk. Assisted by Cold187um (aka Hutch) of Above The Law, he brought in your face music to accompany the thug-on-the-corner street talk lyricism. This album reached #1 on Billboard its first week without any radio or video play.

Tiny Vipers - Hands Across The Void (2007)

This kind of sounds like Bat For Lashes if she was more acoustic; she also sounds like a less squirrel-pitched Joanna Newsome at times. It's good, and makes me wonder why she hasn't recieved more attention.

Download: Mediafire

The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia (2008)

This album is how early to mid 90's alternative rock would sound today. I mean, that's not just what it sounds like, it's what it is, I guess. There seems to be a religious theme running throughout, and the two gravely-voiced singers really compliment each other. Fitting that it's on Sub Pop.

The Residents - Commercial Album (1980)

From their wikipedia page (which you should read if you aren't familiar):
The Commercial Album (1980) consisted of 40 songs that, like Eskimo, rejected traditional song structure. Each consisted of a verse and a chorus and lasted one minute. The songs pastiched the advertising jingle although the songs were not endorsements of known products or services. The liner notes state that songs should be repeated three times in a row to form a pop song. With a leap of promotional imagination, The Residents purchased 40 one-minute advertising slots on San Francisco's most popular Top-40 radio station KFRC forcing the station to play each track of their album over three days. This prompted an editorial in Billboard magazine questioning whether the act was art or advertising.

Van Dyke Parks - Song Cycle (1968)

Van Dyke Parks, who contributed lyrics to the Beach Boys' aborted "Smile" and orchestra direction to albums like Joanna Newsome's "Ys," is like the original Jon Brion. He was signed to a big contract by Warner Bros, who thought rock music was going to take more of a turn towards what Brian Wilson was doing on "Pet Sounds" rather than what the Beatles did on "Sgt. Pepper." They were wrong, and lost million of dollars, while rendering much of Van Dyke Parks career obscured. Blah de fucking blah. He's a great songwriter with a knack for production, and if you can imagine what Jon Brion would have done in the late 60's, this is what you get. Bit rate is 320.

2Pac - Strictly 4 My N***** (1993)

And now the first CD I ever owned. Do The Bartman led to this: Gangsta Rap. 2Pac was a good artist for at least 3 albums, though his frenzied fans often give him a bad posthemus rap (no pun intended). This album in particular is about as sonically deep as anything he did (Dre produced songs not included), and, for all the glory that's thrusted upon "Dear Mama," we see Tupac go the opposite direction here on "Papa'z Song," where, upon hearing that "Daddy's home," 2Pac replies: "So. You act like that means something to me." At that point in my life it did.

The Simpsons - ...Sing The Blues (1989)

This is the first tape I ever owned, and worth every penny my Mom spent. Do The Bartman is classic, as is Homer singing the blues about "if it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all." Yeah, it's novelty, but I freaked out when I found it, and thought maybe someone else might have a similar connection to this.

The Knife - Silent Shout Deluxe Edition Live Disc (2007)

This is the live disc from the re-issue of Pitchfork's number 1 album of 2006, Silent Shout. It contains the better songs from Deep Cuts, and is a great recording. The music is basically gothtronica - a soundtrack to being abducted by aliens while on E. Bit rate is 320, and is thusly split.

Asked my roommate to give you all a description of this, and he gave this insightful diagnosis: It's straight up noise. It's like Sonic Youth, but I don't know. It's fucking awesome. No, it's not straight up noise. Let's see... hahaha, fuck you man.

My Funkadelic Post

What do you get when you fuse together dub, soul, rock, free jazz, counter culture, and drugs? Motherfucking Funkadelic. Starting as the back up band for the more commercial friendly Parliament, and ending up (after legal issues with Parliaments name) as the entire army, George Clinton and Bernie Worrell brought the fury of spaceship funk to the masses. Really, you should know already. Rick James tried, but couldn't hold a light to Funkadelic. They were sampled all over the place during the 90's West Coast G-Funk invasion, providing loops for such classics as Dr. Dre's The Chronic and Ice Cube's post Amerikka's Most Wanted records, as well as being used by East Coast space cadets Redman and Erick Sermon. Some people here may find these albums too soul-based, but I guarantee you won't find me a guitar player in today's indie scene who can tear it up like the opening guitar work of Maggot Brain. Drugs would eventually get the best of them, but during their hay day... As Redman would say, Ask me the flavor, make mines the P-Funk.
